You may come and pick up an application at our Open House for New Applicants held each December. Our application process begins on the day immediately following the day of our open house. All completed applications must be submitted IN PERSON to our school's main office by no later than 4:00 PM on April 1, of the same calendar year as the September of the school year for which you are applying. You will be given a receipt to acknowledge that you submitted a complete application. We do not accept applications sent in by mail, fax, or by any other means.
Students are admitted to the Harbor Science and Arts Charter School solely on a lottery-based system. Every prospective student who completed and submitted an admissions application by the April 1st deadline will be entered into the lottery for our waiting list for the subsequent school year beginning in September of that same calendar year. The lottery will be held in mid-April each year.
The public lottery is held in April for the school year starting in September of the same calendar year. Each grade has its own lottery. First, there is a lottery held for applicants who are siblings (siblings are considered blood siblings or by legal marriage) of a student currently enrolled in the Harbor Science and Arts Charter School. Second, there is a general lottery to complete our waiting list. For each stage (sibling and general, respectively) of the lottery, the names of all students who are applying for a seat in a particular grade, are placed in the lottery hopper. Then the names are pulled out of the hopper and placed on our waiting list in the order that the names were pulled from the hopper. In the general lottery, preference is weighted so out of every group of 10 names, 6 names on the waiting list are students whose families reside in the New York City District 4 community.
IF a seat(s) becomes available in a grade for the upcoming school year, parents of the children on the waiting list for that grade will be called, by phone, in the order that their child's name appears on the waiting list and notified that a seat is available. The parent will be asked if they want to accept the seat. This process is repeated by working through the waiting list until the available seat(s) have been filled.
We will begin to notify parents, by phone, as soon as the school knows how many seats will be available for the upcoming school year. Generally this notification process begins in early-to-mid July, and continues until all of the vacant seat(s) in each grade have been filled.
No. As seats become available for the school year, we will contact the parent of the child who is next on the waiting list for the grade in which a seat becomes available. If you would like to know where your child's name is on the waiting list, you are welcome to contact the office at (212) 427-2244, extension 627, between the hours of 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, on days when school is in session. You may ask for either Ms. Aromi or Ms. Singleton and inquire about where your child's name is on the waiting list.
Yes. Our waiting lists are voided at the end of each school year. Therefore, you must fill out an application for each school year in order to be considered for that school year.

The public lottery for all prospective students, for the 2010-2011 school year was held on Thursday, April 15, 2010, in the school cafeteria.
As a result of the lottery, each applicant's name was placed on the waiting list for the grade for which they applied to for the 2010-2011 school year. All applicants who are accepted off of the waiting list for admission to the Harbor Science and Arts Charter School will be notified by phone as soon as seats become available.
Applicants are not automatically notified of their placement on the waiting list.
Please contact the office if you wish to know the placement of your child on our waiting list as a result of the lottery process.
